Call to artists. Deadline May 27. What’s your Elephant art exhibit

Posted on 09 May 2016 by Niki lopez

Installation dates: June 15-17, 2016
Opening night: Saturday June 18, 2016
Location: 1310 Gallery, Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts

Open to:  all mediums.

Paintings, Sculpture, Installation art, Video art, Mixed media, 2D & 3D works.  Preference given to

Media themes seeking: controversial, hidden agenda, taboos, secrets, discrimination, inequality, privileges,  challenges to social norms,  masks,  cover -ups and other uncomfortable issues we sometimes choose to hide.

Let’s go there again! “What’s Your

Elephant” as in ‘the elephant in the room’ is metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. An important and obvious topic, which everyone present is aware of, but which isn’t discussed, as such discussion is considered to be uncomfortable.

There will be a panel discussion as well as a month-long interactive piece inviting the community to share their ‘elephant’.

Artists are welcomed to  participate  in a community outreach art project  with local at-risk youth.  Artists who are interested in volunteering in the art project please contact the producers of the show. The Nature of Things (by Sylvain Denis)…
“It’s make me think about how things are, also there is nature element in my images and Israel sculptures.  It is also about the way things are or can be represented, Niko’s drawing are exaggerated version of people shape and anatomy and I feel like it can be a true reality of their look. Barry painting have a deeper meaning about people innerself and sole, good or bad it is nature of this world.

This event will have 4 artist:

  • Stone sculptures by Israel Isi Ghelman
  • Photography, by me Sylvain Denis
  • Drawings by NikoYulis
  • Paintings by Barry Gross

About The Curator:

Sylvain Denis is a resident photographer and curator born and raised in Montreal, Canada. Currently residing in Fort Lauderdale where he works as a commercial freelance https://www.acheterviagrafr24.com/achat-viagra/ photographer. Sylvain started his interest in photography at a young age influenced by his own experience as a young model for a fitness publication based in New York City. Since 1994 Sylvain has captured the American Southwest landscape; this collection will be showcased during the exhibition here in 1310 Gallery.

This collection spans a 20-year career sampling his time across the United States from Antelope Canyon, a sandstone canyon carved from flash floods to Monument Valley on the edge of Utah. The American Landscape is constantly basked in hues and waves of light, which change every few minutes, making it probably one of the most challenging places to photograph.

Sylvain’s camera of choice is a medium format film camera, known for their larger size negatives that are transferred into digital files through the process of Drum scanning, which give the highest image resolution possible. Those images are then printed on to metallic paper compressed between polished plexi-glass for their superior glossy and finished look.

Bio of Israel Ghelman:

I studied sculpture, ceramic and drawing in Caracas, Venezuela. In Florida, clay in the Fire and Mud Studio, sculpture in Broward College and work as a Sculpture Lab Assistant.  Participated in group shows in Broward and Palm Beach.  Took part in the Mosan art symposium in South Korea, where I carved a monumental piece in granite for the Museum.
At this moment in my life I decided to sculpt in stone. I take pleasure in the physical contact with the rocks, could be because I love the mountains and life outdoors or for some other reason but they attract me… I think that, in some way, they are sculptures in their natural state… They are part of nature and I analyze their origin, where they “grow” and to which “family” they belong. I am doing it for the last six years, and love to work on them, trying to bring out what they would like to express.

I like to incorporate details and organic forms, but it is essentially abstract art. Passionate about the three-dimensionality of sculpture, in my newest pieces I introduced the rotation on a pin to have a 360 degrees view.  Showing off my sculpture, I intend to provoke intellectual and emotional enjoyment in the viewer of my work.

Bio of Barry Gross:
Artist Barry Gross is a figurative/surreal realistic painter . He primarily works in oils on Belgium linen and delves into mixed media as an under painting and works the painting up with oil. Barry also does drawings using graphite/charcoal and oil sticks on hand tinted Asian rice papers. Barry is in the collections of Malcolm Forbes of Forbes Magazine, Elton John,
Coca Cola.
