Exhibition Statement

Learning to draw is really a matter of learning to see – to see correctly – and that means a good deal more than merely looking with the eye. (Kimon Nicolaides)

In the context of the Exhibition, “to be drawn to it means “to be attracted to a work of Art”. One may be thinking of “drawn” in the artistic sense, as in making a sketch, but in this case, it regards to be the allure of artistic styles and approaches.

About the Curator

He has exhibits both at the national and international level. He is an Art Coordinator at South Broward College and a Gallery consultant.

Niki Lopez’s 10th annual group art exhibition at the 1310 Gallery

What’s Your Elephant Art Exhibit to Opens with Compelling Art and Performances

Opening Night + Performance: Saturday, August 18th | 1310 Gallery | 6pm-10pm

Artist Niki Lopez will be curating her 10th Annual Art Show at Fort Lauderdale’s 1310 Gallery. She was recently featured on the People Magazine Investigates: Cults series on the Investigation Discovery channel. There, Lopez shared her story of being raised in an abusive cult that thrived on secrecy, until she and other survivors broke their silence, which ultimately brought down the cult and its leader.

This experience inspired her to create a space in her art to share her “elephant” (an obvious truth that is being ignored or otherwise unaddressed) and to passionately provide opportunities for others to do the same. What’s Your Elephant uses a combination of art exhibits, interactive installations, and workshops to provoke and facilitate discussions unveiling issues like gender, discrimination, and abuse.

  • Artists for Black Lives Matter #a4blm

Media themes seeking: controversial, hidden agenda, taboos, secrets, discrimination, inequality, privileges,  challenges to social norms,  masks,  cover -ups and other uncomfortable issues we sometimes choose to hide.

Let’s go there again! “What’s Your

Elephant” as in ‘the elephant in the room’ is metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss, It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have chosen to avoid dealing with the looming big issue.

An important and obvious topic, which everyone present is aware of, but which isn’t discussed, as such discussion is considered to be uncomfortable.

There will be a panel discussion as well as a month-long interactive piece inviting the community to share their ‘elephant’.

Artists are welcomed to  participate  in a community outreach art project  with local at-risk youth.  Artists who are interested in volunteering in the art project please contact the producers of the show.
