You Are What You Eat: Art Exhibition and Fundraiser

Fort Lauderdale, FL ‐November 21, 2012 ‐ Exhibit and fundraiser will offer a brief calm after the storm that is Art Basel. This health‐conscious showcase will be held in the artistic lofts/gallery located in Sailboat Bend on Saturday, December 15th, 2012 from 7‐ 11pm. Art lovers and healthy living enthusiasts will enjoy an evening of art and camaraderie with reflections on the pressing need to educate our society about the degenerative Sickle Cell disease and the devastating impact it has on society. This entertaining and informative event is the result of collaboration between Sailboat Bend resident artist Yudelka Tavera and T.J. Brown, founder of the Sickle Cell Natural Wellness Group Inc. The installations and artworks on display will be aesthetic depictions illustrating how vital it is to general wellbeing to maintain a healthy lifestyle by consuming natural foods and participating in “greener” practices.

‘Lull’ a sub‐theme within the highlight of the evening will be a separate showcase within this exhibition presented by Thought Coalition. Artworks within this realm will be expressing the healing process with the body at rest or in motion to symbolize both physical and/or emotional recovery.

The evening promises a visually delicious smorgasbord of sounds and sensations that will appeal to multiple palettes. Spoken word poetry, live musical performances by the Astrokats and Montage, mural painting, fashion and a raw drink refreshment bar to wash it all down.

About the Curators:

Yudelka Tavera is a mixed media artist and visual arts instructor raised in New York City. The message she delivers as an artist is the manifestation of global awareness regarding environmental concerns and sociocultural issues. Her artwork is typically a body that stylistically focuses on the colors, textures, shapes, and formations of the earth’s prominent elements abstractly. Although initially non‐representational there is often a nod at movement, the female form and the usage or depiction of energy both in the literal and imaginative cognizance.

T.J. Brown is a 24 year‐old sickle cell survivor who was told he wouldn’t live past the age of fourteen. In 2010, he founded the Sickle Cell Natural Wellness Group Inc. (501c3) a non‐profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of sickle cell patients and educating the community to make positive healthy lifestyle changes. Through the knowledge of nutrition and a natural holistic approach he has been able to overcome the odds and make a difference so that the word “death” doesn’t immediately follow the diagnosis.

*Sickle Cell affects over 200,000 people in America and millions around the world.

Symptoms include pain, difficulty breathing, low blood count, weakness, strokes, ulcers, bone and organ loss amongst other complications. The life expectancy for people living with this disease is 40, however the majority of those with the disease die before the age of 25.
