You Are What You Eat: Art Exhibition and Fundraiser

Posted on 03 December 2012 by Niki lopez

Fort Lauderdale, FL ‐November 21, 2012 ‐ Exhibit and fundraiser will offer a brief calm after the storm that is Art Basel. This health‐conscious showcase will be held in the artistic lofts/gallery located in Sailboat Bend on Saturday, December 15th, 2012 from 7‐ 11pm. Art lovers and healthy living enthusiasts will enjoy an evening of art and camaraderie with reflections on the pressing need to educate our society about the degenerative Sickle Cell disease and the devastating impact it has on society. This entertaining and informative event is the result of collaboration between Sailboat Bend resident artist Yudelka Tavera and T.J. Brown, founder of the Sickle Cell Natural Wellness Group Inc. The installations and artworks on display will be aesthetic depictions illustrating how vital it is to general wellbeing to maintain a healthy lifestyle by consuming natural foods and participating in “greener” practices.

‘Lull’ a sub‐theme within the highlight of the evening will be a separate showcase within this exhibition presented by Thought Coalition. Artworks within this realm will be expressing the healing process with the body at rest or in motion to symbolize both physical and/or emotional recovery.

The evening promises a visually delicious smorgasbord of sounds and sensations that will appeal to multiple palettes. Spoken word poetry, live musical performances by the Astrokats and Montage, mural painting, fashion and a raw drink refreshment bar to wash it all down.

About the Curators:

Yudelka Tavera is a mixed media artist and visual arts instructor raised in New York City. The message she delivers as an artist is the manifestation of global awareness regarding environmental concerns and sociocultural issues. Her artwork is typically a body that stylistically focuses on the colors, textures, shapes, and formations of the earth’s prominent elements abstractly. Although initially non‐representational there is often a nod at movement, the female form and the usage or depiction of energy both in the literal and imaginative cognizance.

T.J. Brown is a 24 year‐old sickle cell survivor who was told he wouldn’t live past the age of fourteen. In 2010, he founded the Sickle Cell Natural Wellness Group Inc. (501c3) a non‐profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of sickle cell patients and educating the community to make positive healthy lifestyle changes. Through the knowledge of nutrition and a natural holistic approach he has been able to overcome the odds and make a difference so that the word “death” doesn’t immediately follow the diagnosis.

*Sickle Cell affects over 200,000 people in America and millions around the world.

Symptoms include pain, difficulty breathing, low blood count, weakness, strokes, ulcers, bone and organ loss amongst other complications. The life expectancy for people living with this disease is 40, however the majority of those with the disease die before the age of 25.

Lopez (Artist & Designer) is also known for exploring the concept of “alien” in her work. To her, alien isn’t just about the cosmos. “We’re all aliens in some way, not just feeling out of place in this new economy, but being transplanted in new surroundings and having new frames of mind. At our root, our ancient knowledge is alien to us, and it’s my job to help people rediscover it.”

Her co-curator, Asanyah Davidson, creative director of the apparel company Circa24 LLC, found a synergy with Lopez’s mission. Her fashion line is described as fierce sophistication, and she’ll reveal her new Grace Jones-inspired evening line on opening night. Opening night performances include: Fashion show by Adjanie and Circa 24; music by DJ Onestar and DJ Lerue; and live performance by Atlanta’s Profound Breadth (who has opened for artists including Flo Rida, B.o.B., Ludacris, New Boyz, Gorilla Zoe, and Bubba Sparxxx.) and Dana DellaCamera of Nakedown

Ask anyone who knows Niki Lopez and the first word they use to describe her is “community”. A founding member of the 1310 Gallery in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, her studio is a meeting place for church pastors, youth workers, LGBT activists, artists, entrepreneurs, singers, poets, and folks just looking to have a good time. Saturday, July 21, she brings all those interests together in “Culture Clash”, the 4th show she has curated at 1310 Gallery.
Davidson also teaches fashion design, and encourages her students to be leaders in the field. “Fashion is a vehicle to communicate culture and change a person’s perspective about themselves,” says Davidson. “Sometimes expressing culture leaves people feeling alien from the collective, but being apart also means standing out.”

About the curators: Niki Lopez is a multi-disciplinary visual artist, graphic designer, and art teacher. Her often ‘other-worldly’ art has been featured in local and national publications, as well as exhibited across South Florida. She is an Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale Alumni, member of the Broward Arts Guild, and Artspace’s Sailboat Bend Artists Lofts.

Asanyah Davidson is a Fashion Designer born in Clarendon, Jamaica, is owner of Circa24 LLC. as well as Adjunct professor at Ai Miami (Fashion Dept) and Broward College (Continuing Education Dept). Circa24 promises the convergence of simplicity, lush-sophistication and feminine lines that deliver distinction and command attention.

1310 Gallery is located at 1310 SW 2nd Ct. (Middle St.), Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312. Parking: Parking all along SW 2nd court/middle Street, Church parking lot and field across from Fire Museum on West Las Olas, Empty lot directly next lofts along SW 2nd court/middle Street.

1310 Gallery is an artist-run collective that offers over 2400 square feet of exhibition space split into 3 levels, and housed within ArtSpace’s live/work facility, Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts. 1310 Gallery rotates art exhibitions monthly and also hosts performances and workshops. Announcing the first resident-only group art exhibition in over two years at 1310! This event will highlight the work of 27 prominent artists of the Sailboat Bend Artist community through Artspace at their 2,400 square foot, three-floor gallery.

Although this creative enclave has transitioned through a flux-housing both prestigious and emerging local artists since their 2008 inauguration, this exhibition will be proudly featuring the wide-scope of talent nestled there. The newest works by a combination of the veteran residents first to move in to the lofts, as well as residents newer to the community should make for an interesting evening of art, music and culture in Fort Lauderdale.

  • Rory Carracino
  • Phillip Curtis

With any three or more canned/boxed food items donated, each contributor will receive a raffle ticket for an opportunity to score original artwork from one of the generous artists-in-residence.

The artists at Sailboat Bend form a community located in downtown Fort Lauderdale through Artspace. The various disciplines and media include painters, photographers, writers, poets, sculptors, dancers, musicians, actors, graphic designers and non-profit organizations. Since 2008, the gallery has hosted monthly art exhibits, workshops, open studios, live performances, film screenings, and book readings-with over 48 events hosted in 2011 alone.
1310 Gallery is open by appointment in addition to the event times. For further information, please call 305-975-6262.

The Open House listed on Sunday, February 26th will be in conjunction with the Sounds on the Bend free live music concert and the Sailboat Bend Civic Association’s Walking Tour. For more information please visit:
